Aparguments, 2011 Edition
I talk a lot about things having been hard, but by the time I post I always say, “Wow, our relationship sure is awesome! I’m so grateful for all the awesome that we have here! Aren’t we great and cute and wonderful?” And then you all say, “Wow, you sure are awesome and cute and wonderful,” and we’re all happy. Except for some poor person out there who is like, “Well, I just finished having a huge fight with my partner about something stupid, like how she moved a shelf when we moved recently, and now we’re not speaking and last night we went to bed in tears. In Grateful Memory
I can’t adequately convey how much I looked up to this woman. She was tiny, but she was terrifying in the best way. She was completely in charge of a belligerent 200-pound teenage boy; you knew not to be late for her class without good reason. Misunderstood Rednecks
It all started with my college rowing team, second season. We would meet by 5:30 in the morning, eyes still blurry with sleep… If we were lucky (at first), the driver would pick a good station, something quiet to listen to, something to doze to. If we were less lucky (again, early on in the season), one of our team captains would be driving and then – and then! – we were subjected to country music. There’s that whole Stockholm Syndrome thing where you begin to identify with your captors. I don’t want to say that this was actual torture, because it certainly wasn’t that bad and I don’t want to make light of other people’s experiences, but I do want to say that we were certainly a captive audience.
