Misunderstood Rednecks

It all started with my college rowing team, second season. We would meet by 5:30 in the morning, eyes still blurry with sleep… If we were lucky (at first), the driver would pick a good station, something quiet to listen to, something to doze to. If we were less lucky (again, early on in the season), one of our team captains would be driving and then – and then! – we were subjected to country music. There’s that whole Stockholm Syndrome thing where you begin to identify with your captors. I don’t want to say that this was actual torture, because it certainly wasn’t that bad and I don’t want to make light of other people’s experiences, but I do want to say that we were certainly a captive audience.
